Does America's 'Glamour' politics actually detract from finding the best candidate?

As an outsider I'd say it does. There seems to be a lot of 'hype' ociated with the primaries with commentators remarking on the dress styles and other inconsequential peculiarities of the candidates with too much attention afforded to the way their intentions are presented rather than their content.
