Why would Voldemort try to kill Harry if he was one of his horcruxes?

Voldemort did not intend to make Harry into a horcrux; that was a by product of his trying to kill Harry. When the Avada Kedavra spell rebounded it ripped a shred of Voldemorts soul off which attached itself to the only living thing in the room at the time - Harry.
